Born in Vienna in a Jewish family (son of a physician), he fled antisemitism and went to Cambridge in 1937. With Fred Hoyle and Thomas Gold, he developed in the 1940s the steady-state theory of the universe. Professor of mathematics at King's College London, he also worked on relativity and gravitational waves, and directed major British public scientific services.
