Né à Vienne dans une famille juive assimilée (père avocat, mère pianiste). Docteur de l'université de Vienne (1933), il fuit le nazisme en 1936 et rejoint le Warburg Institute de Londres, qu'il dirige de 1959 à 1976. Naturalisé britannique (1947), anobli (1972), Ordre du Mérite (1988).
