Né Sholem Nokhem Rabinovich à Pereïaslav (Ukraine), il adopta le pseudonyme yiddish Sholem Aleichem. Créateur de Tevye le laitier (source des « Un violon sur le toit »), de Menakhem-Mendl et de Motl fils du chantre. Émigré aux États-Unis, il mourut à New York en 1916.
