Born Sholem Nokhem Rabinovich in Pereïaslav (Ukraine), he adopted the Yiddish pseudonym Sholem Aleichem. Creator of Tevye the dairyman (source of "Fiddler on the Roof"), of Menakhem-Mendl and of Motl son of the cantor. Emigrated to the United States, he died in New York in 1916.
