Ami de Jéroboam, réfugié loin de Salomon, il l'aida à prendre le trône des tribus du Nord après la scission du royaume, puis envahit la Palestine sous le règne de Roboam, roi de Juda, prenant Jérusalem pour objectif et pillant le palais royal et le Temple. Ses inscriptions de Louxor rapportent la prise de cent cinquante-six localités, dont Meguiddo, la plus au nord — campagne autant de pillage que de volonté d'empêcher l'unification de la Palestine.
