Né à Bagdad en 1930, immigré en Israël en 1951 sans connaître l'hébreu, il devint l'un des grands romanciers israéliens d'origine irakienne et professeur de littérature arabe à l'Université de Haïfa (doctorat à la Sorbonne). Son œuvre explore l'identité des Juifs arabes et la condition mizrahie.
