From an eminent rabbinical family of Baghdad and descendant of Sadqa Bekhor Hussein, he founded in 1867 the third Hebrew printing press in Baghdad. He translated into Judeo-Arabic parts of the Haggada of Pesach and the Siddur, and documented community life (including a 1892 list preserved at the National Library of Israel).
