Plus jeune fils de Juda et de la fille du Cananéen Choua, né à Kezib, dans la Chephéla de Juda. Sa trop grande jeunesse au moment de la mort de son frère Onan servit de prétexte à son père pour lui refuser d'épouser sa belle-sœur Tamar, selon le récit de la Genèse. Il devint, selon la tradition rabbinique, l'ancêtre de nombreuses familles, ce qu'annonçait déjà son nom.
