Chambellan du palais royal de Juda, dont le prophète Isaïe dénonce l'orgueil pour s'être fait construire un tombeau dans la roche, près des sépultures royales du mont Sion. Son nom trahit une origine non israélite, probablement phénicienne ou syrienne, et il semble s'être élevé sous le règne d'Achaz, favorable aux alliances étrangères ; partisan d'un rapprochement de Juda avec l'Égypte, il fut vraisemblablement fait prisonnier par les Assyriens lors d'une de leurs invasions. Bien que son identité avec le scribe du même nom mentionné plus tard dans le livre d'Isaïe ait été discutée, il s'agit vraisemblablement du même personnage.
