Selon la Bible, Josèphe et le Talmud, souveraine d'une tribu d'Arabie du Sud, contemporaine de Salomon, qu'elle visita à Jérusalem après avoir entendu vanter sa sagesse et sa richesse, avant de repartir émerveillée dans son pays après un échange de présents somptueux. Josèphe en fait la reine d'Égypte et d'Éthiopie, qui aurait introduit en Terre sainte les premiers plants de baumier ; les traditions éthiopiennes font des rois d'Abyssinie les descendants de Ménélik, fils qu'elle aurait eu de Salomon, tandis que les traditions arabes, développées notamment dans le Coran, en ont fait l'héroïne d'un riche cycle légendaire.
