Tanna of the second and first centuries before the common era. According to Derenbourg, his mother was supposedly a Batanean proselyte, hence his nickname "ben Batnit", although this name appears elsewhere as a masculine first name. Associated in business with R. Eléazar b. Tsadoq, with whom he enacted a regulation on the sabbath, he had the custom of filling his measures of wine the eve of holidays to offer to children, and transmitted — or perhaps composed — a saying denouncing the abuses of certain priestly families.

Tanna des IIe et Ier siècles avant l'ère commune. Selon Derenbourg, sa mère était une prosélyte batanienne, d'où il tirait son nom « ben Baṭnit » ; il ressort cependant de Ned. 23a que « Baṭnit » est un nom propre masculin. Abba Saul était engagé dans le commerce avec R. Eleazar b. Zadok, avec lequel il avait émis une ordonnance relative à la loi du Sabbat (Shab. xxiv. 5). On rapporte de lui qu'il remplissait ses mesures liquides de vin la veille des jours de fête afin de pouvoir le donner aux enfants ces jours-là (Beẓah iii. 8). Il est le transmetteur, ou peut-être l'auteur (comp. Bacher, "Ag. Tan." i. 46, note 2), d'une sentence relative aux outrages et délits commis par certaines familles sacerdotales (Pes. 57a).
