Born in Rovigo to a father who came from Venice, ordained rabbi at the seminary of Padua (1837), he was vice-rabbi in Venice, then chief rabbi of Florence (1849–1853), of Casale Monferrato (1857–1859) and of Turin (1859–1877). Figure of the Venetian Risorgimento of 1848–49. In 1865 he launched in Turin the most notable attempt at liturgical reform in nineteenth-century Italian Judaism.
