Born in Pitigliano into an observant Jewish family, student of Israël Costa and Elia Benamozegh at the Rabbinical College of Livorno (rabbinical diploma 1893, degree in liberal arts from Pisa). Upon Benamozegh's death in 1900, he became Chief Rabbi (rabbino maggiore) of Livorno. In 1916-1917 he founded and presided over the Italian Rabbinical Federation (first assembly in Bologna). Author of numerous essays on biblical criticism and Jewish philosophy.
