Né à Metz en 1796, il dirigea l'école du Consistoire israélite de Paris (1822-1836). Il fut le premier à traduire la Bible hébraïque en français pour un public juif : le premier volume parut en 1831, l'ensemble en 18 volumes (avec l'hébreu en regard et des notes) s'acheva en 1851. Cette entreprise exerça une grande influence sur toute une génération du judaïsme français ; il fut fait chevalier de la Légion d'honneur en 1849.
