Né à Hambourg dans une grande famille juive aux intérêts commerciaux, S. Bing s'établit à Paris. Il fut un promoteur majeur de l'art japonais en Occident et, en décembre 1895, ouvrit la galerie « Maison de l'Art Nouveau » qui donna son nom au mouvement. De 1888 à 1891 il réunit et publia la revue mensuelle « Le Japon artistique ».
