Born in Hamburg in a major Jewish family with commercial interests, S. Bing settled in Paris. He was a major promoter of Japanese art in the West and, in December 1895, opened the gallery « Maison de l'Art Nouveau » which gave its name to the movement. From 1888 to 1891 he gathered and published the monthly journal « Le Japon artistique ».
