Né à Mantoue le 19 septembre 1757, mort à Casale Monferrato le 17 octobre 1814. Polyglotte (une dizaine de langues), figure de la renaissance de la littérature hébraïque moderne. Séjourna quatre ans au Maroc, d'où il tira son célèbre récit de voyage Massa ba-Arav (Berlin, 1792). Traduisit Pope en hébreu et composa des poèmes, drames et une grammaire hébraïque-italienne.
