Born Kamal Salah in Baghdad in 1926 in a secular Jewish merchant family, he joined an underground left-wing movement at age 15; condemned to death in absentia, he fled and arrived in Israel in 1949. Writing in Hebrew, he addresses the common fate of Jews and Arabs (novels Victoria, Refuge/חסות, A Handful of Fog). Winner of numerous prizes, he has presided since 2001 over the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI). Died on April 1, 2024.
