Born and raised in Baghdad, Salomon Twena settled in Calcutta in 1880 where he founded a Hebrew printing house that published more than 70 books, largely his own works, as well as Judeo-Arabic weeklies (Maggid Meisharim, 1889-1900; Shoshannah, 1901). A Kohen, he designed a printer's mark showing the raised hands of the priestly blessing. He also translated fiction into Baghdadi Judeo-Arabic.
