Philosophe juif autodidacte né en Lituanie polonaise, il gagne Berlin et devient l'un des premiers grands critiques de la philosophie kantienne. Kant lui-même reconnut la pénétration de ses objections. Il prit le nom « Maimon » en hommage à Maïmonide.
