Victime des expulsions d'Espagne et du Portugal, il vécut à Lisbonne comme marrane et fut témoin du massacre de 1506, avant de fuir vers l'Empire ottoman. Il y composa le Shevet Yehudah, chronique des persécutions subies par les Juifs à travers les siècles (env. 75 récits), l'un des livres hébraïques les plus populaires du XVIᵉ s. et œuvre charnière entre l'historiographie médiévale et moderne.
