Né vers 1505 dans une famille séfarade de Salonique. Kabbaliste, il compose l'hymne d'accueil du Chabbat Lekha Dodi (v. 1579), entré dans toutes les liturgies. Auteur de commentaires : Manot ha-Levi sur le livre d'Esther (achevé 1529, imprimé 1585), Ayelet Ahavim sur le Cantique des cantiques (1552), Brit ha-Levi sur la Haggada (1563). Il s'établit ensuite à Safed, foyer de la kabbale.
