Née à Téhéran dans une famille juive, adolescente durant la révolution de 1979, elle émigra aux États-Unis en 1985. D'abord poétesse de langue persane, elle s'est imposée en anglais avec le mémoire « Journey from the Land of No » (2004), récit de son enfance juive dans l'Iran révolutionnaire. Elle a été productrice de télévision (60 Minutes) et boursière Guggenheim (2008).
