History register · custodian, not owner
Born in a Russian Jewish family, he grew up in Moscow then joined his family in Berlin after the revolution. In the 1930s he traveled through Poland, Ukraine, Romania and the Baltic countries to photograph Jewish communities, before emigrating to the United States. His book A Vanished World (1983) is one of the most detailed photographic documentations of East European Jewish culture before the Shoah.
