Born in Tunis in 1940 to a Jewish family, French mathematician specialist in numerical analysis, nonlinear partial differential equations, and fluid mechanics. Ph.D. (1967) under J.-L. Lions; professor at Paris-Sud then director of an institute at the University of Indiana. Author or coauthor of 12 books and over 400 articles, notably on the Navier-Stokes equations. Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2014).
