Né à Vienne en 1919, ingénieur du son (RCA Victor, Columbia) puis cameraman pour CBS à New York ; il émigra aux États-Unis au début de la Seconde Guerre mondiale pour fuir la persécution nazie, qui coûta la vie à ses parents. Petit-fils du compositeur (juif) Ignaz Brüll, ami de Brahms. Il est connu pour ses milliers de photographies candides de Toscanini et pour sa série sur la Pietà de Michel-Ange.
