Né à Port-Lyautey (Kénitra, Maroc), il rejoint le mouvement surréaliste en 1948 et fonde en 1950–1951 la revue « L'Âge du cinéma » avec Ado Kyrou. Critique de cinéma (Positif), spécialiste du burlesque, du « nonsense » et du cinéma d'animation, il a signé de nombreux essais et monographies (surréalisme, Tex Avery, Buster Keaton, les Marx Brothers, Alain Resnais, John Huston, Jerry Lewis).
