Born in Port-Lyautey (Kénitra, Morocco), he joined the surrealist movement in 1948 and founded in 1950–1951 the journal « L'Âge du cinéma » with Ado Kyrou. Film critic (Positif), specialist in slapstick, « nonsense » and animation cinema, he has authored numerous essays and monographs (surrealism, Tex Avery, Buster Keaton, the Marx Brothers, Alain Resnais, John Huston, Jerry Lewis).
