Ancien marrane portugais (Paulo de Pina), il rejoint Amsterdam en 1604 et revient ouvertement au judaïsme sous le nom de Reuel Jesurun. En 1624, il compose un poème dramatique à la louange du judaïsme, récité par sept jeunes gens à Chavouot dans la première synagogue d'Amsterdam (Beth Jacob).
