Born January 12, 1931 in Johannesburg. Assistant librarian at Rhodes University (Grahamstown), then chief librarian and professor of library science at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) from 1973, professor emeritus after 1991. Author of at least six books and more than 150 articles on bibliography. In 1999 he became library adviser to the South African Jewish Board of Deputies.
