Born in Troyes around 1040, he studied in the yeshivot of Mainz and Worms, then returned to Troyes where he founded a school and lived by trade (wine). He is regarded as the greatest commentator on the Hebrew Bible and the Babylonian Talmud. His Talmud commentary has appeared in every edition since Bomberg's first printing (1520s) and the study of Bible and Talmud still begins today with his glosses.
