En 1918, Rabbi Refael Enkaoua, estimant que la fonction de grand rabbin du Maroc lui revenait davantage, alla le consulter à Fès et lui proposa de partager charge et traitement ; après de longues discussions, ibn Danan se rangea finalement à l'avis d'Enkaoua.
