Chief rabbi of Kraków, he completed Joseph Caro's Shulhan Arukh with his glosses (Mappah, "the tablecloth") reflecting Ashkenazi customs. Without the Rema, Caro's code would have remained a Sephardic work; with him, it became the universal code of Judaism.
