Tanna de la 3e génération, petit-fils d'un grand prêtre. On lui attribue les treize règles herméneutiques (middot) qui servent d'introduction au Sifra, développement des sept règles de Hillel. Son école produisit la Mekhilta de-Rabbi Ishmaël, midrash halakhique sur l'Exode. Compté par la tradition parmi les dix martyrs.
