Born in Aleppo, he was judge at the rabbinical court there, then settled in Jerusalem (1912) where he founded the Magen David congregation and a Torah school. Before World War I he moved to New York, where he established the council of the Sephardic community and became rabbi and av beth din of the congregation of Aram Soba. He returned to Jerusalem in 1935 as head of the Sephardic court until his death.
