Né et élevé à Salé (1696-1743), il est l'auteur du célèbre commentaire « Or haHayim » sur la Torah, l'une des œuvres torahniques les plus étudiées au monde, tant chez les Séfarades que chez les Ashkénazes. L'ancien mellah de Salé conservait la ruelle et la pièce qui lui servaient de demeure et de lieu d'étude. (Sa notice détaillée figure au chapitre Jérusalem.)
