Nicknamed "Light of the Exile" (Meor ha-Golah), he imposed revolutionary decrees (taqqanot) on Ashkenazi Judaism: the prohibition of polygamy, the prohibition of reading another's mail, and protection of the woman in divorce. Founder of the Rhineland talmudic school.
