Rabbah B. Mari

Babylonian Amora of the fourth generation, Rabbah b. Mari spent some time in Palestine before returning to Babylonia, where he transmitted maxims from R. Yoḥanan and R. Joshua b. Lévi and pronounced aggadic teachings that were known even in Palestine. Familiar with the house of Raba, he provided him with the biblical foundations of several proverbs in use among the learned, notably citing a passage from Ben Sira which he held to be a hagiographic text.

Amora babylonien de la quatrième génération, qui résida quelque temps en Palestine et retourna ensuite à son foyer (Yoma 78a), où il transmit les aphorismes de R. Johanan (B. Ḳ. 92a) et particulièrement de R. Joshua b. Levi (Ber. 42b, 44a). Il prononça aussi des conférences haggadiques ('Er. 86), dont certains passages étaient connus même en Palestine (Yoma 86b; B. B. 16b), bien que son nom ne soit mentionné ni dans le Talmud palestinien ni dans la littérature midrashique.

Il fréquentait assidûment la maison de Raba (Ber. 42b), sur la haggadah duquel il exerça une grande influence. Raba demandait les fondements bibliques des idées exprimées dans de nombreux aphorismes courants parmi les savants (B. Ḳ. 92a; Yeb. 62b), et les réponses données le satisfirent. Raba montra aussi à Rabbah treize proverbes populaires, pour lesquels ce dernier donna des références à la Bible (B. Ḳ. _l.c._); et il est remarquable dans ce contexte que Rabbah cita un passage de Ben Sira (Ecclus. \[Sirach\] xiii. 15) et qu'il le considérait comme faisant partie des "ketubim" hagiographiques. En réponse aux questions de Raba, Rabbah b. Mari interpréta aussi les passages de Jér. xxxiv. 5 et II Rois xxii. 20 comme étant en complète harmonie avec Jér. xxxix. 7 et II Chron. xxxv. 23 (M. Ḳ. 28b).
