Born near Grodno (Lithuania), immigrated to the United States at age 16. Founder of the Jewish Legion at the beginning of World War I, he served with the British Army in Palestine. In the 1920s–1930s, director of the Yiddish Teachers Seminary and, in 1932, editor of the pedagogical journal "Yidishe Dertsiung".
