Né à Turin dans une riche famille juive italienne (père Angelo Sraffa, mère Irma Tivoli ; ancêtres marchands à Pise sur plusieurs générations). Invité par Keynes, il s'installa à Cambridge en 1927. Son ouvrage Production de marchandises par des marchandises (1960) fonde l'école néo-ricardienne ; il édita aussi les Œuvres et correspondance de David Ricardo.
