Born in Budapest on December 26, 1927 into an assimilated Jewish family (son of Zsigmond Kende and Margit Hajdu), he was a journalist at Szabad Nép until 1954, participated in the 1956 uprising and emigrated to France in 1957. Researcher at the CNRS, lecturer at EHESS and Paris-X, specialist in the Soviet bloc and the Jewish question in Hungary, he co-founded in 1989 the Institute for the History of the 1956 Revolution and was elected external member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
