Born Pinchus Boruch in a poor Jewish family of innkeepers in the Chernigov governorate. Initially close to Bakunin, he turned to Marxism and co-founded in 1883, with Plekhanov, the group "Emancipation of Labour," the first Russian Marxist organization. Member of the editorial committee of Iskra (1900), he opposed Lenin at the Second Congress of the POSDR (1903) and became the principal ideologue of Menshevism, advocating for a mass workers' party and the self-activity of the proletariat.
