Born in Vienna to a family of landowners, a Zionist, Paul Joseph Diamant was a genealogist and historian of Austrian Jews. He founded the short-lived « Archiv für jüdische Familienforschung » (1912–1913), defended his thesis in Vienna (1929) on Jewish sigillography and heraldry, and devoted himself notably to the genealogy of Theodor Herzl (to whom he was related). He emigrated to Palestine after the Anschluss.
