Austrian physicist born in Vienna to Jewish parents from Loštice (Moravia). Major contributions to statistical mechanics and quantum mechanics (Ehrenfest theorem, classification of phase transitions). Professor at Leiden, close friend of Einstein. He married mathematician Tatyana Afanassieva, with whom he wrote several works.
