Amora babylonien de la cinquième génération, né vers l'an 300 et mort en 375, disciple de Rava et d'Abayé. Après la mort de ses maîtres, il fonde une académie à Neres, près de Soura, où il officie comme « resh metivta » aux côtés de son ami Houna b. Josué. Riche grâce à un héritage et au commerce de la bière, homme d'affaires habile mais peu scrupuleux et peu généreux envers les pauvres, il était réputé savant sans grande indépendance de jugement — au point qu'on le surnommait, avec son associé Houna, « dardeki » (les enfants).
