Né juif en Allemagne, il se convertit au catholicisme vers 1505 en Italie. Professeur de philosophie et de médecine à Pavie, il fut à partir de 1514 le médecin de l'empereur Maximilien Ier à Augsbourg, puis titulaire de la chaire d'hébreu de Pavie (1521) et anobli baron von Sparzenstein (1530). Kabbaliste, il fit connaître la Kabbale au monde chrétien.
