Italian general, born in Sabbioneta, Lombardy, on December 26, 1838, died in Turin on November 2, 1904. Volunteer in the 1859 campaign, he took part in the campaigns of 1860 and 1861 — first Jew to join a general staff —, was promoted captain in 1863, then fought brigands in Basilicata in 1864 and received the Cross of Savoy during the 1866 campaign. Professor of military history at the Royal Military School of Modena and military attaché during the Franco-Prussian War, he became brigadier general in 1888, commander of the Turin division in 1895, Minister of War in 1902-3 and senator of the realm in 1902.

Général italien ; né à Sabbionetta, Lombardie, 26 décembre 1838 ; mort à Turin 2 novembre 1904. Il commença l'étude du droit à Turin, puis entra à l'académie militaire de cette ville. Il s'engagea comme volontaire dans la campagne de 1859, fut promu, et prit part aux campagnes de 1860 et 1861, étant le premier Juif à appartenir à l'état-major. En 1863 il fut promu au grade de capitaine. En 1864 il combattit contre les brigands de Basilicate, et remporta la médaille d'argent pour vaillance militaire ; tandis que dans la campagne de 1866 il reçut la Croix de Savoie ainsi que plusieurs autres décorations. Ottolenghi fut pendant quelque temps professeur d'histoire militaire et de tactique à l'École royale militaire de Modène, et fut attaché militaire auprès de l'armée française durant la guerre franco-prussienne. Il fut également délégué italien à la commission européenne chargée de déterminer la frontière entre la Turquie et le Monténégro, après la guerre d'Orient. Il fut promu général de brigade en 1888 ; commandant de la division de Turin en 1895 ; commandant du quatrième corps d'armée en 1902 ; ministre de la Guerre, 1902-3 ; sénateur du royaume, 1902 ; et commandant du premier corps d'armée, 1903.
