Né à Sohrau (auj. Żory) dans une famille juive, docteur en chimie physique de Breslau (1912), collaborateur d'Einstein. Il met au point la méthode des jets moléculaires et, avec Walther Gerlach, réalise l'expérience Stern-Gerlach (1922) démontrant la quantification spatiale. Il reçoit le prix Nobel de physique 1943 pour la mise au point de la méthode des jets moléculaires et la découverte du moment magnétique du proton.
