Né à Metz en 1782, mort à Paris en 1862 ; mathématicien juif français, admis à l'École polytechnique en 1801 (seul deuxième Juif à y étudier). Il co-fonde en 1842, avec Camille-Christophe Gerono, les Nouvelles annales de mathématiques, première revue française consacrée à la recherche et à l'enseignement mathématiques. Homme des Lumières, il publia sous le pseudonyme Tsarphati des lettres militant pour une réforme du judaïsme et pour l'émancipation des Juifs.
