Né à Bagdad, il y gère la librairie al-Rabita et écrit pour l'Iraq Times avant d'émigrer en Israël en 1951. Chercheur à l'Institut Truman de l'Université hébraïque, il a publié une douzaine de livres sur les Juifs d'Irak et le Moyen-Orient. Lauréat du National Jewish Book Award 1998 (Israel Studies) pour Israel's Place in the Middle East.
