Born in Baghdad, he managed the al-Rabita bookstore there and wrote for the Iraq Times before emigrating to Israel in 1951. Researcher at the Truman Institute of the Hebrew University, he has published a dozen books on the Jews of Iraq and the Middle East. Recipient of the National Jewish Book Award 1998 (Israel Studies) for Israel's Place in the Middle East.
