Indian Jewish poet from the Bene Israel community, son of Moses Ezekiel Talkar, professor of botany at Wilson College in Bombay. The family originates from the coastal village of Tala (Konkan), hence the toponymic name Talkar that his father eventually abandoned. Nissim Ezekiel is considered a founding figure of Indian poetry in English.
