Sir Nikolaus Bernhard Leon Pevsner, born in Leipzig in a family of Jewish origin from Russia (son of Hugo Pevsner and Anna née Perlmann), doctorate from the University of Leipzig (1924). Driven from the German university in 1933 (prohibition on Jews teaching), he emigrated to England. Author of the monumental series The Buildings of England (46 vol., 1951-1974) and director of the Pelican History of Art.
