Disciple of Elimelech of Lizhensk, Menachem Mendel of Rymanov and the Seer of Lublin, he was the first rebbe of Ropshitz and a central figure in Galician Hasidism, renowned for his wisdom, wit and musical gifts. His writings, which he at first refused to publish, appeared with the consent of his disciple Chaim Halberstam of Sanz (Divrei Chaim). He is a spiritual ancestor of the dynasties of Tsanz and Dzikov.
